Prof. Emma Master has been appointed as the new director of BioZone, effective July 1, 2023.
Emma joined the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry in 2006, and has been a key part of BioZone's leadership team since its inception. She is the lead principal investigator on many BioZone funded research programs, including the NSERC CREATE for BioZone training initiative, is the former Associate Chair, Research for the Department of Chemical Engineering, and is a co-founder of YZymes, a company started to help commercialize research from her lab. Emma also holds an Adjunct Professorship position at Aalto University, Finland, and has been the recipient of numerous EU grants.
Emma's research focuses on identifying and optimizing biocatalysts to enable circular bio-based economy frameworks. Over the past ten years, she has supervised 20 post-doctoral fellows, 20 Ph.D. students, and 27 Masters students, and has won several awards for teaching and research.
The BioZone community would like to thank Prof. Elizabeth Edwards for her service as a co-founder and director of BioZone since 2007. Under Elizabeth's leadership, BioZone has grown to become an internationally renowned hub for industrial and environmental biotechnology, with a strong track record in research and student training. Elizabeth will remain part of BioZone's leadership team as the director role transitions to Emma.
