Description:

Reporting to the BioZone Scientific Director, and working closely with BioZone staff, the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) Advancement Team and the University of Toronto Innovations and Partnership Office (IPO), the Executive Director will play a leading role in the solicitation and oversight of funds to support BioZone operations on an on-going, sustainable basis. This will include: providing leadership in the development of a strategic plan for BioZone; playing a major role in writing proposals to a wide variety of potential funders, including granting councils, foundations, public sector agencies and the private sector; working with FASE Advancement and IPO on seeking out and developing relationships with potential donors; leading BioZone public relations activities, including coordination of major BioZone events; high level strategic oversight of BioZone contracts and accounts; full management responsibility for BioZone technical and administrative staff.

Qualifications:

Education:

Minimum of a Master’s degree in biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ph.D. a strong asset.

 

Experience:

5 – 7 years of related experience, including strong background in industrial biotechnology or related industrial experience. Demonstrated experience in research and research proposal writing. Demonstrated experience in research management. Experience with Public-Private Partnerships or related industrial experience. Experience managing staff effectively. Experience in business development that fosters growth opportunities between complementary organizations.

 

Skills:

Demonstrated strong, practical understanding of strategic leadership with the ability to define vision and priorities, governance structures, organization design and resource plans, managing, developing and supporting staff, and in managing organizational change. Ability to manage funding initiatives with senior level individuals working in both public and private sector environments, to complete grant applications and manage budgets and status updates.

 

Other:

Ability to design and implement processes, policies and procedures, to work with students and support student projects, knowledge of information privacy and PHIPA legislation. Proven decision-making skills [e.g., track record of supporting the preparation and execution of successful large grant applications], demonstrated skills and experience managing and leading staff, preferably in a unionized environment. Results oriented, approachable, and collaborative management style. Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment. Superior communication skills to diverse audiences, including oral, written and presentation skills, ability to effectively develop presentation materials using a variety of tools (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.).
